About this course

Sandown, in Melbourne's south-east, is the only thoroughbred racecourse in the country with two separate tracks. It has held metro racing since 1965, and Hillside is the outer of its two circuits, built around the existing Lakeside track decades later. Racing anticlockwise on Turf, it uses the outer home turn and the outside width of the straight — and that straight is a long one by any standard, which is what gives a horse held up off the pace somewhere to make its ground.
