Roebourne races on red pindan earth rather than grass, out on the Harding River in the Pilbara, railed with lengths of old railway line. Racing has been held here every year since the eighteen-sixties, which makes the Nor West Jockey Club the second oldest in Western Australia, and its few winter meetings form part of the Pilbara round that moves between towns across the season. Form from a turf track is a poor guide to a surface like this.
