Port Hedland is one of only a handful of dual-surface racecourses in the country: most of the circuit is hard pindan, the compacted red earth of the Pilbara, and only the finishing section — including the home straight — is grassed. A horse arrives at the turf home straight off a very different footing to what it has just raced over, which is not something any other kind of track asks of a field.
