Port Augusta is the main racing centre for the north of SA, and it does not race on grass: the surface is graded sand, bound with oil or water rather than grown, which makes it a genuinely different proposition from a turf course and means form does not transfer cleanly either way. A long chute joins the circuit at one of the middle-distance starts.
