Penola sits in the Coonawarra, near South Australia's eastern edge, and the district claims the first official race meeting held in the state. Racing has been on the present site since the early nineteen-hundreds, and the course is still shared by more than one local club. It is circular with some tight turns, and a short run home, so a good draw is worth more here than at a roomier track.
