Mackay races at Ooralea, just out of the north Queensland sugar city, on a constantly turning oval that is narrow even by country standards — under twenty metres across. Width like that, with a short run home, tends to favour horses racing on the pace: there is simply less room to come around a field. The course was rebuilt in the twenty-tens on an engineered turf surface.
