Kalgoorlie races in the goldfields, a long way east of Perth, on a diamond-shaped circuit rather than an oval — an unusual layout that gives the track four distinct turns instead of two sweeping ones. Racing has been held in the district since the gold rush of the eighteen-nineties, when meetings ran at several tracks across the fields; the season here runs through the cooler months from autumn to spring.
