Inverell races in the far north of New South Wales, on the New England tablelands, and its shape is an unusual pairing: a tight circuit of many turns feeding into a long home straight. The Jockey Club runs only a handful of meetings a year, and the New Year's Day Cup is far and away the biggest of them.
