Hobart races at Elwick in Glenorchy, under Mount Wellington and above the Derwent, on an egg-shaped circuit fed by four chutes. The detail that decides races here is the rise into the home turn: the bend climbs, so a horse ridden hard to get there is often already spent when the straight opens up.
