Gundagai races on the Murrumbidgee, on the Hume Highway corridor, and the shape of the course is unusual: two elbows rather than a smooth curve, which breaks the circuit into short straights instead of one long sweep. That geometry makes early speed matter more than it would on a plain oval — there is less time to make up ground lost at either bend.
