Armidale is a New England course two blocks from the middle of town, and it is genuinely undulating rather than flat: the field runs downhill into the home turn and then climbs all the way to the post. That combination punishes a horse ridden too aggressively early. The club dates from the eighteen-sixties and its Jockey Rooms are heritage-listed.
