Ararat, near the Grampians in western Victoria, has been racing since the eighteen-fifties and is among the oldest courses in the state. It is a big clay-soil circuit with long sweeping turns, banked, and a slight rise through the straight; the short-course start is known as a hard one from a wide draw.
